Bursley Ltd.

1432 Peonies

As with items with the Woods backstamp, Charlotte’s name didn’t appear on Bursley Ware pieces, so there is still some debate about which ones she will have actually designed. Bernard Bumpus suggests that most items with two or three figure pattern numbers are likely to be hers – when she officially left in 1926, they were up to around number 900. It is thought however that she continued to supply designs to them on a freelance basis well after this date, and there are certainly examples of items with four figure pattern numbers that have to be attributed to her on stylistic grounds; pattern 1550 (linked below) is a good example.

Bursley Ltd. Printed Patterns:

These patterns were not given numbers, but the backstamp usually incorporated the pattern name. An example of this is shown below. All are attributed to Frederick Rhead. Examples exist with the Wood & Sons name instead of Bursley Ware.
